As I write this in October 2024, a remarkable event has taken place: for the first time in history, researchers specializing in artificial intelligence have been awarded the Nobel Prize in both Physics and Chemistry. This recognition by the Nobel Committee, often regarded as conservative, is widely seen as an acknowledgment of AI as an extension of human intelligence and as marking the dawn of its definitive arrival. While we live in an era where human intelligence is believed to have reached unprecedented heights, this advancement is accompanied by a strangely opaque sense of uncertainty. Alongside optimistic visions of advanced technology solving humanity’s greatest challenges, there exists a deep-seated fear that it may one day overwhelm us. It is in this intersection of hope and anxiety that When Spiders Spin Dusk poses critical questions about the technologies we use today and the cultures they have affected.

The term “Ddang-geomi(땅거미)” in the exhibition title carries dual meanings in Korean. Firstly, it refers to the dim light of “dusk”, an ambiguous moment between day and night when it is difficult to distinguish whether the silhouette over the hill is that of a dog or a wolf—a metaphor for our current uncertainty about whether today’s technologies are a blessing or a curse. Secondly, “Ddang-geomi” also refers to a spider living on the ground. In Greek mythology, the genius artist Arachne dared to challenge the goddess Athena in a weaving contest and won, only to be cursed by Athena to become a spider. The spider, symbolizing talent, has since appeared in countless fables and myths. Even without knowledge of these stories, the spider’s ability to read its environment, connect edges, and weave webs mirrors the role of the artist who observes societal phenomena, connects disparate elements, and creates something new. In this way, sunset hour becomes a project reflecting on our current circumstances, the era we inhabit, and the questions art can pose in response.

To explore these questions, we invited UKAI Projects, a nonprofit organization based in Toronto focused on AI research and education, to join the project in November 2023. One of the core considerations in this collaboration was the belief that examining how historical storytelling and cultural ideologies shape or obscure technological systems could serve as a vital starting point for fostering better narratives about AI, the climate crisis, and ecosystems. The ongoing dialogue among participants with diverse cultural backgrounds resembled the process of weaving willow branches from different soils into a basket. Just as crafting a beautiful basket requires selecting branches of the right thickness, length, and color, the six participating artists aligned their languages and perspectives to organize their individual experiences into a collective framework. This relational process, central to the project, extended beyond human interactions to include technology, ecology, and landscapes. It became an inquiry into how diverse experiences could coexist without being devalued or subsumed and how they could be integrated into a larger whole. Through this sustained dialogue, the project consistently asked how we might view technology, nature, and humanity through a relational lens.

In today’s rapid advancements in media and technology, the minerals and natural resources required to operate modern technologies are being depleted at an alarming rate. Every component of the expanded network of AI systems—from network routers to batteries and data centers—relies on raw materials that took billions of years to form within the Earth, yet these resources are being exploited and consumed in a matter of decades. Nature, long treated as a resource for human convenience and prosperity, is similarly entangled in an exploitative relationship or, at best, a commensal relationship with technology. This anthropocentric domination extends beyond nature and technology and ultimately affects people as well.

As is widely acknowledged, the production and processing of data for AI often depend on the low-wage labor of workers in the Global South. Additionally, numerous incidents of conversational AI systems generating sexist and racist remarks underscore the persistent patterns of subjugation embedded in human systems. As the development and use of AI accelerate, hierarchical structures and biases perpetuated by a small elite are likely to grow even more pronounced.

Before we reach a point where we consume one another in this cycle of exploitation, can we find a way to break the structural chains of domination—where one side controls and profits at the expense of the other—and instead establish more equitable relationships within today’s technological environment?

Borrowing the words of novelist Han Kang, the project sought to explore a “language of imagination from the first-person perspective of all beings on Earth,” a language that connects us to one another. Last September, curators, researchers, and artists from Korea and Canada gathered at a farm in Wakefield, Quebec, to embark on this exploration. They began by cooking and sharing meals, walking together in the forest, collecting sounds of mushrooms and insects, and learning how to breathe alongside the living beings inhabiting that space.

The conversations and interests we shared during this process intersected, diverged, and wove through one another, branching out in multiple directions. (These interconnected interests like a networked system, making them difficult to summarize in just a few keywords. However, to aid in understanding this project, they have been organized into three main thematic explorations.)

Firstly, the works of Sunjeong Hwang and Erica Jean Lincoln, both of whom explore the interconnectedness of ecological, cultural, and technological systems, can be tied together under the concept of “planetary weaving.” Hwang interprets weaving not merely as the physical act of interlacing fibers but as a multilayered practice that forms profound connections among nature, humans, and technology. She further sees weaving as a process that integrates data, material, and temporal layers to create perceptual experiences.

In her work Warp×Warp(West)(2024), Hwang reimagines traditional weaving by removing the weft and devising a porous tree structure made entirely of warp threads. This porous system, formed using imagery and data of microorganisms, fungal spores, and algae collected during her research, metaphorically represents the tangled temporalities, events, and existences of the world we inhabit. While Hwang dedicates herself to weaving together Earth's entities, Lincoln seeks to discover connections between the flow of water in her body and that of the planet. She goes further by personifying technologies like GPS, using their glitches to construct new narratives.

Her piece GPS Dreams: La Pêche(2024) originates from physical and psychological challenges she encountered during a residency. Unable to explore the forest due to abnormal weather conditions and physical limitations, Lincoln relied on GPS and 3D scanners to navigate the terrain. While sleeping in her tent, she discovered distorted mountain data caused by GPS errors. Imagining the GPS as though it had sleepwalked across the mountains, she merged this data with the contours of her own body to create a fictional landscape. Her whimsical approach is rooted in recognizing technology as an equal entity, transforming technological errors into playful and creative events rather than failures.

Next, Maurice Jones and Unmake Lab interpret technology within the social and cultural contexts and view it in connection with historical narratives. Drawing from the concept of Black techné, which seeks to realize new possibilities created by artificial intelligence and the radical survival strategies of Black communities, Maurice explores how the history of Black societies formed through marronage—autonomous communities established by escaped slaves—can be applied to contemporary machine learning technologies. Through this lens, he investigates how technology can break free from existing systems and serve as a tool for liberation.

Unmake Lab, on the other hand, examines the latent spaces inherent in artificial intelligence within the framework of synthetic ethnography, focusing on the colonial practices historically embedded in “taxidermy” and “trophy hunting” imagery. During their research, they visited various museums and archives, observing scenes where animal remains were artificially preserved through taxidermy, symbolizing and materializing animals in specific ways. Furthermore, they identified how longstanding cultural habits and practices are reflected in the objects generated by AI—for instance, in trophy hunting imagery, where recurring elements such as white men, rifles, and sunset-lit savannas appear. They liken this phenomenon to “muscle memory,” shaped by practices cultivated over time, and have coined the term “muscle data” to describe it.

Lastly, Sunjoo Lee and François Quévillon present works rooted in ecological and geological research, exploring the role of art in addressing today’s ecological crises. Sunjoo Lee’s Counting Attunment(2024) investigates the potential of electrochemical processes in wetland bacteria as a means to replace conventional power systems. Her work questions systems created and judged by human standards, such as time and utility, by reinterpreting electricity, generated through interactions among diverse microorganisms, as something to be cared for rather than merely consumed.

François Quévillon, who has extensively documented the diverse terrains and ecosystems of Canadian gorges, cliffs, and coastlines, presents Growth and Decay (2024) in this exhibition. This work was developed during the residency at the Ferme Lanthorn and involved observing the vegetation along streams and using computational photography to examine the process of growth and decay inherent in plants. By combining multidimensional photography with AI-generated 3D imagery, Quévillon meticulously records ecosystems affected by climate change and human activity. He then reconstructs these environments on a natural scale within the exhibition space to draw attention to the vitality and phenomena of nature.

Through such acts of interaction with others, reflections on the past to understand the present, and actionable practices, When Spiders Spin Dusk explores ways to restore equitable exchanges with non-human life forms and to share breath together. In a world suffocated by the arrogance of humanity believing itself at the apex of the ecosystem and by the pollution emitted by its technological achievements, we can once again learn the universal act of breathing from the earth. The breath of plants sustains the existence of animals and humans, and we endlessly share this act of breathing as we coexist. Ultimately, rediscovering how to breathe alongside the beings within and around us becomes a journey toward an alternative cultural origin—one that does not seek to dominate but instead nurtures the bonds we share with our environment.

생명을 망각한 문화에서 보편적 호흡 찾기

이 글을 쓰고 있는 2024년 10월, 인류 지능 발전의 지표이자 그 공로를 인정하는 노벨상의 물리학상과 화학상 두 부문에서 최초로 인공지능 연구자가 수상하는 일이 일어났다. 이는 보수적이라고 평가되는 노벨 위원회마저도 인공지능을 인류의 지능으로서 인정하고 그 본격적인 등장의 서막을 알리는 것이라는 평가가 뒤따른다. 이와 같이 인간의 지능이 그 어느 때보다 발전했다고 믿어지는 시대를 맞이한 반면, 그에 대한 밝은 미래에는 왜인지 모를 불투명한 감정이 뒤따른다. 발전한 기술이 인류가 지닌 모든 문제를 단번에 해결해줄 것이라는 밝은 청사진과 더불어, 그것이 언젠가 우리를 압도할지 모른다는 공포가 공존하기 때문이다. 이처럼 기대와 우려의 중간지점에서 《땅거미 지는 시간》은 오늘날 우리가 사용하는 기술과 그 기술이 형성해 온 문화에 관한 질문을 던진다.

전시 제목에 등장하는 ‘땅거미’의 어원은 한국어로 크게 두 가지 뜻을 지닌다. 가장 먼저, 해가 진 뒤 어스름한 상태인 박야(薄夜)를 뜻한다. 낮도 밤도 아닌, 언덕 너머로 다가오는 검은 실루엣이 개인지 늑대인지 구분하기 어려운 시간, 오늘날의 기술이 인류에게 수혜인지 재앙인지 모를 시간을 의미한다. 한편, ‘땅거미’의 또 다른 해석으로, 말 그대로 땅에 사는 거미를 지칭한다. 그리스 신화에는 천재 예술가 ‘아라크네’가 자신의 베 짜는 실력을 믿고 여신 아테나에게 도전하여 승리를 따냈으나, 결국 아테나의 노여움으로 저주를 받아 거미로 변했다는 설이 있다. 그로부터 많은 재능을 지닌 시람으로 거미는 많은 우화와 신화 속에 등장해 왔다. 이러한 신화 속 이야기를 알지 못하더라도, 거미가 주변 환경의 구조를 읽고 모서리를 이어가며 거미줄을 직조해내는 능력은 오늘날 사회 현상을 바라보고 대상들을 연결하며 새로운 것을 창조해내는 예술가의 역할과 닮아 있다. 즉, 이 프로젝트는 우리가 처한 상황과 시기, 그리고 그로부터 예술은 무엇을 이야기할 수 있는지에 대한 고민을 담은 프로젝트이다.

그리고 그러한 고민을 나누기 위해 2023년 11월, 캐나다 토론토 기반의 비영리 기관이자 인공지능 분야에 관한 연구와 교육 활동을 해오고 있는 우카이 프로젝트(UKAI Projects)를 프로젝트에 초대하였다. 협업의 과정에서 우리가 주요하게 고려했던 것 중에 하나는 역사적 스토리텔링 기법과 문화적 신념이 기술 시스템을 어떻게 확산시키거나 또는 의도적으로 모호하게 만드는지에 대한 탐구가 사람들이 인공지능, 기후 위기, 생태계에 대해 더 나은 이야기를 나누고 들려줄 수 있는 중요한 출발점이 될 거라고 믿었다. 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 지닌 이들이 언어로 대화를 지속해나가는 과정은 마치 다른 토양에서 자란 버드나무 가지를 엮어 하나의 바구니를 직조해나가는 과정과 유사했다. 아름다운 바구니를 만들기 위해 버드나무 가지의 두께와 길이를 솎아내고 색을 선별해나가는 과정이 있듯, 우카이 프로젝트를 포함한 6명(팀)의 참여작가는 서로가 지닌 언어의 온도를 맞춰나가면서 각자의 경험을 여러 갈래로 조직해나갔다. 이렇듯 다른 존재와 관계를 맺어나가는 과정은 이 프로젝트의 중심을 이루는 활동이었다. 이러한 호혜적 상호작용은 사람과 사람에 국한되지 않았으며 기술과 생태, 지형으로 이어져 나갔다. 이는 어떻게 하면 한 경험이 다른 경험과의 연관 속에서 평가절하되거나 다수성으로 소멸되지 않으면서, 그 많은 경험들을 통합할 수 있을지에 대해 알아가는 고민의 연속이었다. 그리고 지속적인 대화 속에서 우리가 꾸준히 질문하고자 했던 것은 기술과 자연, 인간을 관계적 시각에서 살펴보는 방법에 관한 것이었다.

오늘날 미디어와 기술의 발전에 있어 지금 순간의 기술을 운용하는 데 필요한 광물과 천연자원들이 급격히 고갈되어 가고 있다. 네트워크 라우터에서 배터리와 데이터 센터에 이르기까지 인공지능 시스템의 확장된 네트워크에 속한 모든 요소는 수십억 년에 걸쳐 지구 내부에서 생성된 원료를 단기간 내에 훼손하고 소진시킬 것이다. 인간의 편의와 번영을 위해 이용의 대상이 되어온 자연은 기술과의 관계에 있어서도 한쪽이 다른 한쪽을 이용하는 착취 관계 또는 편리 공생(Commensalism)의 관계를 맺는다. 그리고 이러한 인간중심주의의 손길은 자연과 기술을 지나 결국 사람에게로 향한다. 주지하다시피, 인공지능에 사용되는 데이터를 생산, 가공하는 일에는 제3세계 국가의 사람들의 저임금 노동력이 투입된다. 뿐만 아니라, 대화형 인공지능에게 가해진 성차별적, 인종차별적 발언이 문제가 됐던 많은 사례들로부터 인간이 계속해서 만들어 온 종속된 관계를 알 수 있다. 인공지능의 개발과 사용이 가속화될수록 소수에 의한 계층구조와 편향성은 더욱 심화될 것이다. 그렇다면, 우리가 서로를 갉아먹는 지경에 이르기 전에, 한쪽이 다른 쪽을 통제하며 이익을 얻는 구조적 관계의 고리를 끊고 오늘날의 기술 환경에서 보다 동등한 관계를 이루는 방법은 없을까.

소설가 한강의 표현을 빌려, ‘이 지구에 사는 사람들과 생명체의 일인칭 시점으로 상상하는 언어이자 서로를 연결해주는 언어’를 탐색하기 위해, 지난 9월 한국과 캐나다의 기획자와 연구자, 예술가는 퀘벡주 웨이크필드에 위치한 농장에 모였다. 그리고 함께 밥을 지어먹는 것으로 시작해, 숲 속을 함께 거닐며 버섯이나 풀벌레 소리를 채집하고 그곳을 살아가는 생명체들의 틈바구니 속에서 함께 호흡하는 방법을 알아가고자 했다. 그 과정에서 우리가 나눈 대화와 관심사는 서로의 것을 교차하고 경유해 나가면서 여러 갈래로 퍼져 나갔다. (그 관심사는 마치 네트워크 시스템처럼 엉켜있어 몇 가지 키워드만으로 정리하기에는 어렵지만, 이 프로젝트에 대한 이해를 돕고자 주요하게 세 개의 내용으로 나누었다.)

먼저, 생태적, 문화적, 기술적 시스템 간의 상호연결성을 탐구해 온 황선정과 에리카 진 링컨의 작품세계를 “행성적 연결(Planetary weaving)”이라는 키워드로 연결시켜 볼 수 있다. 황선정은 직조(weaving)의 개념을 단순히 물리적으로 섬유를 엮는 기술이 아닌, 자연, 인간, 기술 사이의 깊은 연결성을 형성하는 다층적 행위로 해석하고, 나아가 데이터와 물질, 시간적 층위를 직조해 지각적인 경험을 만들어내는 과정으로 보았다. 비물질적인 방식의 직조 방법을 고민한 작가는 <일탈하는 날실의 베>(2024)를 통해 전통적인 직조 개념에서 ‘씨실’을 제거하고, 날실(warp)로만 이루어진 다공성 나무(porous tree)의 형태를 고안한다. 작가가 리서치 기간 동안 수집한 미생물, 버섯 포자, 조류(algae) 등의 이미지 형상들과 데이터를 기반으로 형성된 나무의 다공적 시스템은 현재 우리가 살아가고 있는 세계의 시간, 사건, 존재의 얽힘과 다양성을 은유적으로 보여준다. 황선정이 지구의 존재들을 엮어나가는 데에 몰두했다면, 에리카는 자신의 몸을 흐르는 물과 지구를 흐르는 물 사이의 연결성을 찾고, 나아가 GPS와 같은 기술을 의인화하여 기술로부터 나타나는 글리치 현상으로 새로운 내러티브를 써내려 간다. <GPS가 그리는 꿈: 라 페쉬>(2024)는 레지던시에서 작가가 겪은 신체적, 심리적 어려움으로부터 출발한 작품이다. 기후 변화로 인한 이상 기온과 신체적 한계로 인해, 숲 속에 들어갈 수 없었던 작가는 범지구위치결정시스템(GPS)과 3D 스캐너에 의존해 주변 지형을 탐색했다. 텐트 안에서 잠을 자는 동안 GPS의 오류로 생성된 산의 지형 데이터를 발견한 작가는 GPS가 마치 몽유병에 걸려 산을 오른 것으로 가정하고, 이 데이터를 자신의 신체 굴곡과 결합해 가상의 지형을 창조해냈다. 그녀의 엉뚱한 상상력은 기술을 동등한 존재로 인식하는 관점을 기반으로 하며, 기술이 지닌 오류를 ‘실패’가 아닌 유희적이고 창의적인 사건으로 풀어낸다.

다음으로, 마우리스 존스와 언메이크 랩은 기술을 사회와 문화의 맥락에서 해석하고 역사와의 연결선 상에서 바라본다. 흑인 사회가 생존해 온 급진적인 방식과 인공지능이 만들어내는 새로운 가능성을 구현하려는 블랙 테크네(Black techné)의 개념으로부터 마우리스는 도망친 노예들이 자립적인 공동체를 구축했던 ‘마로니지(Marronage)’의 흑인 사회의 역사를 현대의 머신 러닝 기술에 적용함으로써, 기술이 기존 시스템에 얽매이지 않고 해방의 도구로 작동할 수 있는 방법을 모색한다. 합성 민속지학의 맥락에서 인공지능에 내재된 잠재공간에 관하여 탐구해 온 언메이크 랩은 ‘박제술’과 ‘트로피 헌팅’ 이미지를 중심으로 역사적으로 그 안에 깊숙이 자리해 온 식민주의적 관행을 드러낸다. 이들은 리서치 기간 동안, 여러 박물관과 수장고를 방문하며 동물의 사체를 인위적으로 보관하는 박제에 담긴, 동물을 상징화하고 물질화했던 장면들을 목격한다. 이와 더불어, 오랜 기간 축적되어 온 인간의 문화와 관습이 인공지능이 생성하는 이미지에 특정 오브제_예를 들어, 트로피 헌팅 이미지에서는 백인 남성, 소총, 황혼의 사바나_로 나타나는 현상을 마주하며, 마치 오랜 기간 습관에 의해 길러진 근육을 닮은 이것을 ‘근육 데이터’로 명명한다.

마지막으로, 이선주와 프랑수아 퀘빌론은 오늘날 생태적 위기에 있어 예술이 어떠한 실천과 기여를 할 수 있을지에 관한 생태학적, 지질학적 연구를 바탕으로 작품을 선보인다. 이선주의 <헤아림>(2024)은 습지에 사는 박테리아가 일으키는 전기화학 작용을 활용하여, 기존의 전력 시스템을 대체할 수 있을지에 대한 탐구로부터 탄생한 작품이다. 작가는 시간이나 용도와 같이 인간의 기준에 의해 만들어지고 판단되는 시스템에 대해 질문하며, 다양한 미생물 간의 작용으로 인하여 생성되는 전기 에너지를 만듦으로써, 전력을 소비하는 대상에서 돌보아야할 존재로 재해석한다. 캐나다의 협곡, 절벽, 해안가 등 다양한 지형과 그곳에서 서식하는 생태에 관하여 기록함으로써 그 관계를 탐구해 온 프랑수아 퀘빌론은 이번 전시에서 <성장과 소멸>(2024)을 선보인다. 이 작품은 페름 랜톤 레지던시 기간 중, 개울가의 다양한 식생과 관찰하고 이로부터 식물이 지닌 생성과 소멸의 구조를 탐구하기 위해 컴퓨터 계산사진술을 활용해 다각도로 촬영하고 인공지능으로 3D 이미지를 생성한 것이다. 그는 기후와 인간의 활동으로 인하여 영향을 받은 생태의 모습을 매우 사실적으로 기록하고 이를 자연의 스케일로 전시장에 구현함으로써, 자연이 지닌 생명력과 현상들에 대해 사람들의 관심을 불러일으키고자 한다.

이처럼 타자와의 상호작용, 과거로부터 현재를 바라보는 시각, 실천적 행위를 통해, <땅거미 지는 시간>은 비인간 생명체들과의 평등한 교환 관계를 복원하고 함께 숨을 공유하는 법을 이야기한다. 그동안 인류가 이뤄온 기술적 성취에 빠져 인간이 생태계 최상위에 있다고 믿었던 자만과 그 성취가 뿜어내는 매연에 질식한 상태에서, 다시금 살아 있음을 느끼고 보편적으로 함께 호흡해 나가는 방법을 우리는 땅으로부터 배울 수 있었다. 식물의 숨은 동물과 인간 존재들을 숨 쉬게 하며, 우리는 끊임없이 호흡을 공유하며 살아간다. 결국, 우리 안팎의 존재들과 함께 호흡하는 법을 알아가는 일은 우리가 환경과 맺는 유대의 끈을 놓지 않고 다른 세계를 지배하려는 목표를 갖지 않는 대안적 문화의 기원을 찾아가는 여정이다.
